The 2009 H1N1 Influenza A is a type of influenza (flu) virus that causes respiratory disease that can spread between people. Most people infected with this virus in the United States have had mild disease, but some have had more severe illness and have even died.
Individuals aged 6 months to 24 years of age, pregnant women, and people aged 25 to 64 years of age with chronic diseases like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease are at higher risk for complications from this infection.

Since the flu is spread between people, there are steps you can take to prevent the spread of the flu:

  • Clean your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer (alcohol based) if you must, and teach children good hygiene.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue if you have one or your upper sleeve - not your hands.              Then put used tissue in the trash and wash your hands.
  • Contain the flu by staying home if you are sick with flu-like symptoms.
  • Also, get the 2009 H1N1 Influenza A vaccine, once it is available.

The symptoms of the 2009 H1N1 Influenza A (flu) are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu. They include:

  • Rapid onset within 3-6 hrs
  • Fever * of more than 100 ° F  for 3-4 days
  • Cough  -usually a dry, non-mucus producing
  • Body aches  & pains are common with the flu
  • Headache is very common with the flu
  • Chills  - 60 % of people experience chills with flu
  • Tiredness  - moderate to severe

*Some people do not develop a fever but have also reported diarrhea & vomiting
